Nigeria’s Child-Witches
November 9, 2008
People have always looked for scapegoats because it’s a human reflex to point the finger and blame someone else for whatever woes or emergency is happening and the victims are usually subjected to physical, mental or social punishment for reasons irrational and groundless.
The same revolting process is being practiced in today’s Nigeria, where children are being labeled as witches, forced to receive torture, and are then abandoned.
Religious extremists (particularly from Liberty Gospel Church), manipulating Christianity and their follower’s deep-rooted traditional beliefs, identify witches and then demand a lucrative fee (up to one year’s worth of income) from the family in exchange for driving out the evil spirits through various horrific means.
The disgrace of being branded a witch is difficult to overcome; few within the Nigerian community look to assist them because of the stigma attached and those that survive become refugees.
